This
is me, Keith. I've had
a passion for old cars since I was very young. I blame it on my
parents, who bought me a Matchbox model of a vintage Bentley for being
a brave boy at the dentist (it was a particularly gruesome visit). The
first real cars that I owned were old bangers, which kept breaking
down, and thus I learned about car
maintenance through necessity.
After a spell of 17 years in
banking (it's alright, I'm
better now) I was made redundant in 1990. It was probably for the
best ... I was a rotten bank manager really ... terrible at saying
"no"! Anyway, that's when I set up Rye Classics. Originally, the
emphasis was on vintage car tours for tourists and for special
occasions, but licensing an 80 year old car for that sort of work
became increasingly complicated, and so that area of work gave way to
wedding hire.
After
a very short time, I teamed up with Colin, who is my mum's cousin's
husband (if you can work that out). Colin shared my passion for cars,
but with a lifetime's experience in engineering, he is a mechanical
genius. He is also a perfectionist, and the reputation that Rye
Classics has earned over the years for excellence is mostly down to
him. As time passed, our roles evolved naturally to the present status,
where I deal with the business end, the bookings and arranging
schedules etc., while Colin works his magic on the cars.
 More
recently, Melvyn joined us with a couple of cars that complemented our
existing collection nicely. Having become a good friend, it was clear
that Melvyn shares many of our values, and making him a part of the
team seemed to be the only sensible thing to do.
All of the cars
featured on this website belong to one of the three of us, and this is
how we can be sure of maintaining the exceptional standards that Rye
Classics has become known for. We have a small team of drivers, all of
whom are hand-picked not only for their driving ability, but also for
their character. After all, a ride in the most beautiful car could be ruined by a miserable so and so in the driver's seat.
We have good relationships with other reputable
operators, and will gladly work with others if we cannot satisfy your
requirements entirely from within our own fleet. If you are seeking
something specific, we will try to help you to find it, but we will
never pass off somebody else's vehicle as our own.
I hope that you will have gathered that, while we always endeavour
to do our work with good humour, we take the responsibility of serving
you very seriously, and our mission is to do everything in our power to
make your special day even better. Many couples over the years have
been kind enough to tell us that we have succeeded.
Incidentally, you may have noticed the fish logo just to the left,
which is a subtle way of saying that I am a Christian. If you want to
know more about that, and how it affects my approach to business, just
click on the fish. If you want to know all about God, sorry, this
website just ain't big enough!
